Yuletide Reveal and Fic Roundup [01 Jan 2009|08:29pm]
YULETIDE REVEAL
The reveal is up, and I can say that I guessed who wrote Merrie Melodies for me; it was [info]deejay! I totally called it!

I, however, did not come close to guessing the author of my yuletide treat, Respite. I had read and enjoyed [info]thingswithwings's SGA fic, but I never knew she was interested in Miracles.

I wrote in the same fandom I received in: Four Times Alva Didn't Kill Paul, and One Time He Did, Miracles-fic. I posted it over at [info]miracles_fanfic as well as on the Yuletide archive.

TITLE: Four Times Alva Didn't Kill Paul, and One Time He Did
AUTHOR: Melody
WRITTEN FOR: [info]emmademarais in the 2008 [info]yuletide challenge.
RATING: G
WORD COUNT: 1,492
SPOILERS: For "The Ferguson Syndrome," "The Patient," "Little Miss Lost," "Hand of God," and "Paul Is Dead."
AUTHOR'S NOTE: I was rewatching "The Ferguson Syndrome" and I noticed that, during the car-hit-by-a-train scene, Paul looks at Alva and sees a brief flash of the demon from his dream. This story was born when I started to wonder why.

( The first time Alva thought about it, he considered the idea carefully. )

2008 FIC ROUNDUP
I did not do a whole lot of writing in 2008. Perhaps 2009 will be more productive. I guess we'll see.

JANUARY-MARCH: Nothing.
APRIL: Steal It! (The Crazy Girl Remix), a House/Wonderfalls crossover I wrote for [info]remixthedrabble.
MAY-JUNE: Nothing.
JULY: Dead Or Alive, a Supernatural story I wrote for [info]spnflashfic.
AUGUST-OCTOBER: Nothing.
NOVEMBER: Two little stories this month! Succulent (The Orchard of Dreams Remix), a Supernatural/Miracles crossover, and Zen and the Art of Interior Design (The Charlie’s Couch Remix), a Life story, both written for [info]remixthedrabble.
DECEMBER: Four Times Alva Didn't Kill Paul, and One Time He Did, my [info]yuletide story.

That's a grand total of five stories, or an output of 4,185 words for the entire year. That's kind of pathetic.

I wanna do bad things with you. [31 Dec 2008|10:21pm]
I just watched the first three episodes of the HBO series True Blood, and I'm hooked. It's based on Charlaine Harris's Southern Vampire books, but I'm finding the show much more compelling than the books -- which is odd, because it's very true to the novels. It's just filled with all kinds of interesting things. The parallels between vampires and homosexuality and coming out of the closet are really clear in the show, even more strongly then in the novels.

But I think True Blood should win the prize for best opening credits sequence of the year. They're really, really cool. Take a look:

Alan Ball gets good opening credits, I guess. They're what I liked best about Six Feet Under, too:

All this has made me start to think: what makes for good opening credit sequences? Interesting music combined with interesting visuals that highlight the thematic concerns of the show -- that's apparently what does it for me. Neither of those sequences shows the actors at all, which is unusual for opening credits.

Other opening credits I like include Miracles, which is along those lines, but does show the actors' faces:

What else? What are some of your favorite opening credit sequences?

ETA: I forget one last set of credits I wanted to include. They're for the show The 4400.

I think what really makes for good credits is evocative-ness. They need to evoke a mood, a place, a theme...they should put you in the right frame of mind for watching the show. What do you all think? Agree/disagree?

2008 in Review [31 Dec 2008|06:56pm]
Here is the first line of the first post I made each month in 2008.

JANUARY: I updated my website with the stories I wrote for [info]yuletide this year.

FEBRUARY: Is there a Firefly equivalent to the community [info]sgastoryfinders?

MARCH: I've just discovered a book trading website that has caught my fancy: Book Mooch.

APRIL: God. That was brutal. [NOTE: This post was in reference to the Torchwood season two finale, "Exit Wounds."]

MAY: Sound effects quiz!

JUNE: I was attempting to icon-ize a screencap from the SGA episode "Doppleganger," but was unable to get it to fit into the 100 pixel by 100 pixel square required by LJ.

JULY: It would have been perfect, if it weren't for the part about Donna. [NOTE: This post was in reference to the Doctor Who season four finale, "Journey's End."]

AUGUST: I am happy, happy, happy right now because my new box set of Witchblade DVDs just arrived in the mail!

SEPTEMBER: The more I learn about Sarah Palin, the less I like her.

OCTOBER: Because I know a few people IRL who aren't registered...

NOVEMBER: Funniest thing I've seen in quite a while!

DECEMBER: My brain is officially fried from grading papers (why, oh why, did I even assign a stupid paper on The Great Gatsby? Did I forget I was going to have to read them or something?), so it's time for a meme!

Happy New Year! [31 Dec 2008|06:28pm]
I meant to have one last set of [info]yuletide recs up before the reveal, but it doesn't look like that's going to happen. There are just SO MANY STORIES to read! Every time I thought I had almost finished, I would remember a fandom I hadn't looked at yet. Discworld! I still need to read the Discworld stories! And Hot Fuzz! And, OMG, there are how many Merlin stories in the archive? And...and...

So, anyway. In other news, I just finished watching the movie Elf on tv, which I had never seen before. It was that peculiar combination of laugh-out-loud funny and incredibly stupid that only Will Ferrell movies can achieve, with some added Christmas-movie sweetness. Very cute.

Another set of Yuletide recs. [29 Dec 2008|03:32pm]
CHUCK
Four Times Chuck Was a Hero by Being Nerdy. Some lovely Chuck characterization, and a seriously cute story. Very fun read.
It was show-and-tell day, and his mom said it was okay for Chuck to bring his new lightsaber to school.

Because Your Kiss (Your Kiss) Is On My List. Chuck/Casey. After the events of "Chuck vs. the Ex," Casey is feeling conflicted. Through a series of events including accidentally discharging a firearm, Thanksgiving dinner, and surprise!kissing, he manages to resolve his internal conflict in a thoroughly enjoyable fashion.
"Look. I'm just thinking we've been on this detail too long. We're gonna get attached to him. All this stuff with the girlfriend, his family, all of it. We're on the guy almost 24/7."

"On him?" Walker had smiled sweetly and Casey's trigger finger had itched.

"I don't know why I talk to you."

EUREKA
Crisis Management (or Just Another Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood). A series of vignettes, showing Jack and Henry dealing with various Eureka-esqe crises, and forging a friendship in the process. Lovely.
"A giant robot?" Jack asked for the third time.

"Well, an AI, technically," Henry said. "And whether or not it's giant is really based on--"

"There is a giant robot attacking the town," Jack said flatly.

February Fourth. A short and hilarious look at what would happen if the town of Eureka hosted a battle bot tournament.
Jack peeked past the edge of the overturned desk and narrowly avoided another laserblast.

LIFE
Zen and the Art of Maserati Maintenance, or Five Times Charlie Crews' Thoughts Turned to Love. Het. A wonderful look into Charlie Crews's head. He's so messed up, but he knows it, and he's trying so hard...!
If there's one thing he's learned in Pelican Bay, it's that love - in all its forms - is what makes life worth living. That, and he's had enough solitude to last him a lifetime.

Angulimala. Charlie and Ted in prison. This story blew me away! I could really hear Charlie's voice in this, so clearly. A sweet, sad, and slightly creepy story -- just like Charlie.
He wondered what it meant for the plastic tray to go from what it had been born to be, a non-harmer, to becoming a knife. He said, "Non-harmer is the name I bear, who was a harmer in the past, the name I bear is true today, I hurt not any one at all."

Why DirecTV Is a Bad Idea. This was a little slice-of-life story, Crews and Reese in the car on their way somewhere, charming and fun.
"No, I don't know the top five things to do in a car are, but I am sure that you are going to tell me." He liked how she could anticipate these things.

the rain and the sun. Another look at Charlie in prison, but this story somehow manages to be full of light and warmth and life. Fabulous.
He lies in bed that night, ignores the scratch of cheap cotton and Ted's soft snores, and imagines being an apple.

DIANA WYNNE JONES -- CHRONICLES OF CHRESTOMANCI
A Unicorn in Central Park. An utterly fabulous crossover with How I Met Your Mother. Very well done, with excellent character voices. Plus, how can you not want to read a Chrestomanci/HIMYM crossover?
Nobody noticed the four children who appeared in Sheep's Meadow dressed in old-fashioned clothes. Or if they did, they gave no sign that this was anything unusual. Probably because it wasn't.

HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER
Waiting. Barney decides to cheer Robin up at Christmas. Featuring laser tag, Robin and Barney being bros, and the return of Robin Sparkles. Plus some very HIMYM-like flashbacks!
Barney throws open the door of MacLaren's, races across the floor (arms flailing away), and skids to a halt against the table hard enough to rattle beer bottles.

The four people in the booth stare at him.

"Can't -- talk," he wheezes, bent over with his hands on the table. "Too much -- awesome."

DIANE DUANE -- YOUNG WIZARDS
Terminus. This felt very much like it came straight from the pages of the novel. It combines errantry, a look at how Tom and Carl met, and an examination of how Nita and Kit's lives are changing now that they're growing up and going off to college.
"RING RING!" yelled Peach, who was obviously in one of her moods. "The future is calling!"

DR. HORRIBLE'S SING-ALONG BLOG
The Ballad of Penny Peabody. This story did a superb job of fleshing out the character of Penny and turning her into a real, three-dimensional human being. I'm so glad I read it; it's just the story I've been needing to read since watching the webisodes. This is what fanfic is for, y'all.
It comes to her like a flash of lightning thirty seconds before she walks on to the stage with him that Captain Hammer is a total and complete waste of time.

HAMLET
Wittenberg Days. See, this? Is why I love yuletide so much! Where else could you get such a fabulous, clever, seamless crossover of Hamlet and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead? And such spot-on, flat out funny dialogue? Plus Hamlet/Horatio slash, FTW! This one's a must-read.
GUIL: I think you may be laboring under a misconception.

ROS: Exactly! He needs a miss.

GUIL: What?

ROS: And a conception.

GUIL: What are you talking about?

ROS: And, eventually, labor. Et voilá, an heir, everyone is happy, and Hamlet can go back to whatever it is we did not see him doing with Horatio just now.

PSYCH
Hearts Are Won, Empires Fall. A completely adorable Shawn/Gus story in which Shawn finally gets up the courage to tell Gus he loves him. Be afraid, Gus, be very afraid!
Shawn loves Gus. He love, love, love, love, loves him. Adores. Loves to the power of googolplex and one. Wants to crush him to his manly bosom every second of every day!

But he can't say the words.

He's tried. Oh, how he's tried. But it always comes out as "Gus, I... lost my left sock" or "Gus, I... long to be a member of the Tiffany 'I Think We're Alone Now' Brigade."

THE PRINCESS BRIDE
A Storybook Story. This story has been recced all over the place, and for excellent reason: it's just that good. A perfectly delightful coda to the film, it's what comes next after that last kissing scene.
"I'll be fi--" Inigo said, and then started coughing blood.

Westley said, "This is bad."

"I'm very sad," said Fezzik.

SLINGS AND ARROWS
Ingenue. Geoffrey/Kate. This story was lovely and perfect and delicately-handled. Despite the distinctly non-canon pairing, it absolutely felt like a tiny missing slice of first-season canon. Very well done.
In her, even now, he sees Ophelia, she breathes Ophelia, she is everything that any of them could have hoped for.

Lonely Hearts. This fabulous gem of a story filled me with glee. It has Anna (yay! Anna! Anna being awesome! ♥) and Geoffery and Ellen, moving on and doing what they love. And absolutely pitch-perfect dialogue! I loved it.
"No, we will not advertise your brand of mineral water on the back of our seats!" said Geoffrey, and Anna kicked him under the table, but it was too late. "We will not, on any occasion, rent out our main stage to itinerant bands of glam rock minstrels! We will not, in any circumstances whatever, be accessible!"

"Except to wheelchairs," said Anna, automatically.

Today's Yuletide Recs [27 Dec 2008|07:00pm]
30 ROCK
I'll Ask Her. Random and silly and funny in exactly the way the show is funny.
"Your safe word is 'safe word'?"

"I don't have a safe word."

"Obviously."

Fragments of a Day, a Life, an NBC Page. Perfectly in-character Kenneth voice. This made me laugh.
And then, for no reason, Conan O'Brien just hangs up, all in a hurry. It's lucky he's in show business, because that? Is not super polite.

BEING HUMAN
Hope. An utterly fantastic examination of Mitchell -- his character, past and present. Also, some smoking hot Mitchell/George slash.
It was strange, even after all this time, even after knowing what horrors lurked under George's skin, how much he was compelled to treat him so carefully. Yet there were worse terrors in the world than werewolves, and there was something to be said for preserving what tiny ribbons of innocence still clung to his friend.

Birth of a Friendship. A look at how Mitchell and George met and became friends.
"You smell interesting," was the first thing Mitchell ever said the George. If George hadn't already dealt with his fair share of creepy it would have been the creepiest thing anyone had said to him.

The Abyss Gazes Also Into You. George, struggling with the monster within, and Mitchell, helping as much as George will let him.
"You kill things," George said, comprehension dawning.

Mitchell lit a cigarette, darting his tongue out to lick at the last vestiges of George's blood. "You kill things too."

"We should kill things together!" George joked, but upon seeing Mitchell's expression, sobered up. "Or maybe not."

Mitchell gave George a dead-pan stare. "It's probably best if we work at not killing things together."

I Am One Such Dream. Annie and George, learning about each other. This story had a lovely, sweet, gentle feeling to it, and a wonderful Annie-voice.
Annie thinks George has a list of questions about her, which he's ticking off as he tries to discover the rules. Mitchell laughs at him. "What do you think you're going to do, publish? The Care and Feeding of a Ghost?"

George tilts his head, as if considering. "Reckon people'd buy it? It'd be easier than the hospital for sure."

Annie pretends to be put out, but it's fine in small doses. The more attention he pays her, the less likely she'll be to fade at the pub and cause general panic.

The real panic comes when you realize there are no rules.

LIFE
A Basket of Cellophane. An utterly lovely, delightful, and happiness-inducing Charlie/Ted story. I was grinning like a lunatic by the end.
This is how Ted and Charlie end up living together:

"We should get married."

"I'm sorry," Ted says. "What?"

Thanks. Charlie, Ted, and Rachel at Thanksgiving, holding on to their dysfunctional, makeshift family with all their might. This story made me giggle. Ted cooking a turkey is just somehow inherently funny, but also lovely and sweet.
Ted ended up regretting the big turkey. He didn't regret the impulse that had caused him to buy it, though.

DONALD STRACHEY MYSTERIES
The Thin Man Takes a Husband. A wonderful look at how Donald and Timothy might have met. A long, plotty case-fic involving one of my all-time favorite cliches (going undercover and being forced to pretend we're a couple!) AND a falling-in-love romance. ♥
Donald dropped his hand, cocked his head, and looked up at Timothy curiously. "Are you volunteering to come along to maintain my cover?"

Timothy bit his lip, wondering if he was crazy for contemplating just that. "Will it be dangerous?"

Donald appeared to consider that for a moment, then jerked his thumb in the direction of a beat-up looking car. "It's probably less dangerous than going for a drive in this city."

Timothy raised an eyebrow. "In that car? I would definitely say
that's more life-threatening."

CHUCK
Four Things Bryce Larkin Regrets and One Thing He Doesn't. A wonderful examination of Bryce's character and his relationship with Chuck.
It's possible this whole Zelda thing is symbolic of something else, but Bryce doesn't have a clue what it could be.

PSYCH
Nothing You Can Know That Isn't Known. Gus/Shawn slash, seen through Henry's eyes. Perfectly delightful.
The first time Henry walked in on Shawn on bended knee obscuring Gus' thighs, he assumed it wasn't what it looked like.

The Curious Case of That Time With the Thing. A completely fantastic Gus/Shawn hurt/comfort fic, leaning heavily towards the comfort. This story really highlights just how much Shawn genuinely loves Gus, aside from all the crazy antics. There are crazy antics aplenty in this story -- it wouldn't be Psych without them -- but there is also a true depth of feeling here that shines through.
Of course Spencer saves Gus from the evil clutches of Mrs. O'Reilly (white hair, twinkling eyes, World's Best Nana! mug, stains that were not delicious homemade red sauce on her sturdy apron, butcher's knife). He bursts through her lace-curtained kitchen door, gun drawn, just in the nick of time.

Deck the Halls With Glowing Deer. Gen. Shawn and Gus crack the case of the mysteriously disappearing tacky Christmas lawn decorations. Great fun.
"I've always wanted a hippopotamus for Christmas," Shawn said, sounding especially thoughtful, just before he threw his empty Dr Pepper can across the office into the recycling bin and thrust his fists in the air, triumphant.

Gus Goes for the Gold Star. More Gus/Shawn slash! You wouldn't think a story where Gus is writing a Yuletide story would work, but it totally does. Awesome meta, and a completely in-character Gus and Shawn.
"Shawn, stop anthropomorphizing my office supplies," Gus says.

A non-yuletide related recommendation [26 Dec 2008|04:36pm]

First few yuletide recs [26 Dec 2008|03:25am]
MIRACLES
Discerning of Spirits. Lovely Alva/Paul interaction, and very true to the feeling of the show -- slightly creepy and just a bit skewed from the norm, so that everything feels a bit surreal and you're not quite sure what it all means, but it's all meaningful nonetheless.

ETA: Also, my two stories, of course!

VORKOSIGAN UNIVERSE
Proposals and Propositions. Ivan/Byerly slash. This made me laugh like a crazy laughing thing. And it had the most perfect ending line ever! Oh, Ivan.

DEAD ZONE
Family is Everything. This story hit my found family kink pretty hard. (Despite my word usage in the previous sentence, this story is also totally rated G.) Johnny and the Bannermans, together at the holidays, as family should be.

ETA: There are some funky formatting issues here though. Try to ignore them; I think the story's worth it.

PSYCH
Domo Arigato. Little Gus thinks little Shawn might be a robot, and sets out to investigate. Silly and sweet, just like the show.

THE MENTALIST
Palm, Switch, Steal is the best Mentalist story I've ever read (not that I've read very many). The author hits all the right character notes -- she knows who Patrick Jane is, inside and out. To quote from the comment I left:

Jane is so broken, and putting himself together the best that he can. Some pieces may be missing, but he keeps going anyway. His coworkers -- his friends -- help fill in the gaps.

This story took my breath away. Excellent, excellent read.

Yuletide is really a big gift to ALL OF FANDOM. And I am antisocial. [25 Dec 2008|02:03pm]
There are so many stories in the archive I want to read this year, and I haven't had a chance to read any of them except the ones I received (and I was only able to read those because I stayed up until 3:00 in the morning last night for that express purpose). OKAY, FAMILY, I KNOW IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY, BUT PLEASE TO BE LEAVING ME ALONE TO READ FANFIC NOW, YES?

Yuletide is here! Yay! [25 Dec 2008|02:57am]
I love my stories! Yes, stories -- I got two! One full story and one [info]yuletide treat! And they are both fabulous -- happy and warm and just plain adorable! I love them!

Both are Miracles stories, which also made me very happy.

The story: Merrie Melodies by ?. I'm pretty sure I recognize the author of this story ([info]deejay?) because of the Brother Bobo reference, which is, in turn, a reference to my Yuletide story from two years ago, Old Forgotten Words or Ancient Melodies. But I'm not positive; that could be a fakeout. Anyway, I ♥ this story; it's utterly adorable!

The treat: Respite by ?. This story was lovely, warm, slow, and soft - a gentle caress of a story.

Big hugs to both of my authors! You are awesome!

And now I am going to bed.

Another Ted-centric Life fic rec. [23 Dec 2008|02:04am]
Darkness and Grapefruit by [info]jesshelga. When Charlie finds Ted after being released from prison, Ted's not doing so well. This story speculates about what that means, exactly.

The character voices ring true and clear in this story, and it really captures the dynamic these two share that makes me love them so much. Wonderful story!

No wonder we have such an unrealistic standard of beauty nowadays.

My [info]yuletide story just wasn't working, and wasn't working, and really, really was not working. I was beginning to be afraid I'd default this year. So I finally did the sensible thing and just scrapped that draft and started over from the beginning.

Ahhhh.

So. Much. Better!

I know exactly what I'm going to write, I have both a plot arc and an emotional arc mapped out in my head, I even have a title! I'm set, baby! I just need to rewatch a few episodes, sit down at a keyboard, and write this puppy!
