i am really grumpy that i have to figure out a new goddamned website just to post my yuletide story. especially since i didn't get an invitation til today, the story is due monday, and i basically only have internet at work. which is insane. in.sane.

grump grump grump.

(the story's okay. it's half written, and that half is, like, all dialogue, so i am not actually worried about it at all. except about it getting betaed.)

my parents told me about the baby... in the Annual Christmas Letter to "family and friends".

baby due, by the way, at the end of april. yes, the wedding was in mid-july, thanks for asking.

ugh. family stuff is so ridiculous. this is also a letter which gave the impression that a) when i went to spokane in february i did more than just have dinner with my parents and b) that i wasn't at my grandmother's funeral at all. and it arrives on the same day as an email from mom thanking me for being so good at the store when i was little. i mean. what?

fuck this. go back an entry and talk to me about the sing off ;)

so i've been sick for two days, and i still *am* sick but i had to come back to work because, you know, the holidays, and just as a flavor of how today is going, about an hour ago i said to my boss: "well, you know, it's after 10, so it's happy hour *somewhere*", but...

CAN WE TALK ABOUT THE SING-0FF?

please tell me someone else was watching it. I AM FULL OF OPINIONS. who should win? how awesome is it that the sweet ads stayed in so long? how much did that last tag on the beach boys medley make your toes curl? how lesbionic was that blonde in the mormon choir? how much more do we now love ben folds?

discuss.

Fests and Whatnot [17 Dec 2009|09:40am]

What season is it? It's fic/art exchange season!

Okay, not that I've really had a chance to read much of anything yet since I'm hip deep in final exam grading (and finishing my [livejournal.com profile] yuletide fic, a process which is swiftly approaching the OMG BEARS! phase *g*), but I did want to draw your attention to the two other fests I'm currently participating in:

1. [info]snapelyholidays. I haven't received my story yet, but for those of you who, like me, love Snape in all pairings, this year's assortment will make you think it's your birthday! Along with the always welcome Snape/Harry and Snape/Lupin and Snape/Hermione, we've already had Snape paired with Lily and McGonagall and Regulus and Sirius and Dumbledore and Lucius and Neville and Filch and Moody and Slughorn and Shacklebolt. Wheee!

2. And then there's Good Omens. The [livejournal.com profile] go_exchange is one of my "must-do" fests each year, even though I'm only on the periphery of that fandom, and one of the reasons is because of stories like the one I received this year: a long, wonderfully written, future history that's only dystopian to the extent that a canonical Apocalypse is dystopian, which...oh. Hmm. No, okay, go back to where I said "wonderfully written" and then add original and clever. "World Without End"...go read!

Oh, and just as an addendum: I will be running [info]hp_beholder (the fic/art exchange designed to get some loving for the most unloved of HP characters) for the third time. Sign-ups will commence at the end of January/start of February (to give everybody a chance to recover from the holiday fic blitz). And just so you know, I'm giving each new participant this year a car! (*is a lying liar who lies*)

Because it wouldn't be theholiday season without LJ acting like asshats. [14 Dec 2009|11:33pm]

Take a look at this charming news from [dreamwidth.org profile] synecdochic about LJ's decision to make Gender a mandatory field and only allow the options 'Male' or 'Female.'

Even if I didn't have friends who identify as transgender or genderqueer, I'd still be disgusted by LJ's shortsighted and, quite frankly, hateful decision, because...what will our next mandatory binary choice be? “Black or White?” “Christian or Atheist?” How many ways can you imagine you being written out of the equation?

Read the relevant linked posts, consider changing your gender listing to unspecified' while you still can (if you haven't already done it), and consider – one more time – whether it might not be smarter to leave LJ once and for all.

in other news that i keep forgetting to post here, apparently my brother's wife is pregnant, due "in the spring". i found out from my aunt, who assumed i knew already and was looking for more information. which clearly i did not have. she apologized to me for my family. heh.

i am now taking bets on when someone closer to the blessed event will feel compelled to tell me. in between email forwards, of course. at work we decided that i have a greater obligation to knit for my coworker's impending niece or nephew, because i was the fourth person who found out about *that* baby. i've seen ultrasound pictures! i know how much she's dilated, for heaven's sake!

i suspect i will be informed about this one when there is a job involved. perhaps shower related. i am choosing to find it hilarious.

[stuff i did in the past week] [07 Dec 2009|11:48am]

[ mood | sleepy ]

1) joined twitter, but just for film. no, really. it's here.

2) saw equivocation, which is super fun if you are a shakespeare nerd. which i am.

3) attended the figgy pudding caroling competition, which was fantastic, especially the labor chorus (who rewrote carols to be about peace & environmentalism & stuff) the beaconettes (who were full of seattle in-jokes) and the tap dancing carolers (who were just awesome).

4) revisited yuletide source(s).

5) started to freak out over the families i have yet to find sponsors for. eek.

ETA i forgot the most important thing. i booked myself for two weeks off in january \o/
